Velika Karlovica
Five little red floodlights

February 15, 2025, 12 pictures

Most images are approximately 768 x 1024 pixels in size, numbers in front of the picture descriptions are serial numbers of the original photo files. Names of cave parts were often given by the author.
The purpose of the excursion, in addition to repeating two photos from the previous trip, was to test illuminating larger spaces with just five 1,000-lumen floodlights.

54923. View from the Cvinger viewpoint towards the east, across the ever more empty lake

54938. Water level at the opening in the dam at the entrance to the cave. Compared to
ten days ago, the water level is lower by about 40 cm.

54937. View from the dam at the entrance to the cave towards the east, to the wooden rakes in the riverbed. Repeated photo
54696 from a previous excursion, where there was not enough cave ceiling in the frame.

54925. View back towards the cave entrance, across the stream bed. Repeated photo
from a previous excursion, with additional lighting of the bank on the left side of the image. Due to the sunlight (it was cloudy today, with snow in the field), the previous shot is probably better anyway.

54926. A similar photo, just from a position a little further in the cave ...

54927. ... and once again the same motif, from in front of the rocks in the previous photo.

54929. Along the wall on the bank, the dripping water began to smooth the stones on the ground.

54930. To break up the shadows on the ground due to the side lighting from behind the stone in the foreground, lighting from above was also required. The image shows an improvised installation of a narrow-beam lamp about two meters above the ground.

54931. View down the riverbed towards the end of part of the tunnel, accessible on foot at this water level.

54933. View across the brook at the point where a small tributary joins it from a side tunnel.

54934. "Stub" with a varied ceiling above the stream

54939. Lamps that the author had with him on this excursion. There are 15 in total, 11 were used, all but four from the top row. In the second row from the top are two handheld flashlights with a variable beam (zoom) from narrow to very narrow (each weighing 36.5 dkg). In the third row are five red floodlights (21 dkg each), named after the color of the housing, which were tested this time. In the bottom row, from left to right, are a helmet-mounted headlamp, a weak light with a wide beam to illuminate the immediate foreground in many photos, and two headlamps with a very wide beam of light (270⁰), used as regular flashlights. Together they weigh 2.45 kg, about half the weight that the author carried on his back. The rest is the weight of the backpack, the tripod, the extension tubes for the tripod legs, spare gloves, shorter cords for hanging the lamps from wall or ceiling protrusions. In addition, he carried four hazel sticks, about 1.8 meters long, tied together, for placing the lamps in higher places along the walls or freely in the middle of the cave space. The sticks are also useful as walking aid when crossing large rocks or shallow water.
