Galacijevka Cave

5 February 2016, 19 pictures

The cave, cadastre number 3472, is officially known as Škrlovo brezno or Brezno v Galacijevem talu

The place, originally a blowhole, was excavated by Renato Verbovšek - Rene and Jožko Jurečič - Koko on 7 February 1971 and a cave opened, 24 meters deep, 24 meters long. As it is in the immediate vicinity of the long lost Lipertova jama cave it got renewed attention in the spring 2015 by the senior members of DZRJL (Ljubljana Caving Society), who were most active half a century ago. It was the time when the quest for Lipertova jama cave triggered the opening of the inner parts of Najdena jama cave, which is now over 5 km long, and the seniors decided to give Galacijevka another chance. The excursion, depicted here, is the third digging operation in the winter 2015/2016.

Pictures are approximately 683 x 1024 pixels in size. Numbers in front of the photo descriptions are serial numbers of the original images. Excursion participants, in no particular order: Janez Kanoni - Žan, Gregor Pintar - Stari, Metod Di Batista, Marjan Baričič, Riko and Rok Grecs, Jurij Trenz - Trenc and Primož Jakopin - Klok. Marko Vogrič - Mare stopped by to greet the team on his way to Sežana.

Down the Cave Entrance

28749. Entrance from inside, slightly deeper

Bottom Chamber, the Worksite

28734. Metod, descending to the bottom chamber, just before the draught direction changed from inside-out to outside-inside.

28735. Marjan is waiting for Žan, at the end of the excavated canal, to fill up the bucket. End of the canal is now too narrow to pass but there is a strong draught and a very sound echo which both promise large void below. It may well be some tunnel of Najdena jama cave, but it may also be a new cave. Seeing is believing ...

28743. Metod, Riko and Žan on a platform, made of excavated rocks

28742. Stari is looking for tiny fissures in the rock where the chisel could be put to best use.

28747. Technical consultation: Žan, Marjan and Metod

28736. Small sledge hammer and a pointed chisel can be quite effective in patient and experienced hands.

28737. The full collection of close-combat arms

28748. Metal dust pan, indispensable for removal of small gravel, weathered in many battles, very much in accord with the excavation team

In the Forest, from Galacijevka to Najdena jama Cave
