This page explored the use of camera on a rather simple cell phone, the LG K8 G4, the author obtained it tied with his very basic mothly mobile phone plan, for 24 installments, 1 euro each. All the photos were taken with its camera, except the first 4, where a Canon EOS 100 D was used, with 40 mm f 2.8 STM lens.
On the Sunday between Radošca 17 and Radošca 18 Brajko and Blaž wanted to visit Najdena jama, to check the water level and to have some extra fun. Žan was at the place as the gazeebo is always in a need of improvement and Klok, by play of circumstances, also concluded that his presence would be the most suitable way of spending this particular afternoon. Skednena jama cave is not far away and with some luck an attempt to synchronise mobile phone camera with external flashlights would be a most interesting addendum.
33136. Brajko likes to prepare most known American food, burgers, following his own recipe. In the picture: four Brajko burgers, ready to eat
33137. Side close view of a Brajko burger, consisting of: sliced bun with grilled inner sides, special Brajko sauce, grilled chopped meat, cheddar cheese
33138. The 5 Brajko sauce ingredients
33139. Žan is leveling the ground for the gazeebo entrance.
33140. A humble alternative to Brajko's burgers: yeast-free bread, yogurt, garlic, apple compote
33142. Fire in the stove produced a most pleasant warmth on a cold evening and its view was a wide palette of colours, from white to yellow and orange to red and dark red. The cell phone camera only has an automatic colour temperature setting which produced this pinky gamut.
33141. In a scene with Blaž at the open stove the fire colours improved considerably.
33186. What are Marjan, Mare and Ičo doing? The shovel handle broke at the metal ear and the best way to rectify the problem was to shorten the handle slightly, to cut the broken 5 cm away. Žan with his power saw was momentarily absent ...
33187. ... and so Ičo's mini-saw from the Swiss army knife did the job.
33188. Mare is checking if the opening for the future door is low enough.
33189. Marjan with firewood on the slope to the south
33190. View of the gazeebo from the south
33191. Another nouvelle cuisine meal: vegetable stew with sauerkraut and chicken wings, bread, garlic, pancakes, apple compote
33192. Mare is cleaning the headlamp of Brajko - it was so muddy that the light barely passed through.
33193. Brajko started his descent into the cave.
33194. Marjan joined Mare to help him haul up buckets from the cave - the excavation pile is growing steadily.
33195. Brajko just released a bucket which Mare and Marjan are hauling up; flash was turned on but would better stay off.
33196. Brajko with another bucket, Gregor is in the background. Slightly blurred - low light conditions pose a very difficult task to the camera's tiny sensor.
33197. Manč is moving up a larger rock, over the knee. His headlight is warm white while the author's headlight, used from the side, is cold white which shows as blue.
33198. Matod at the end of the cave - a narrow meander opened up, too small to pass but a good indicator of direction.
33199. Marina passed buckets on to Gregor, Manč moved them up from Metod ...
33200. ... over the bend of the tunnel.
33201. Portrait of Gregor. Tiny cell phone lens could not help but add a myriad of side effects to a picture with a powerful light source.
33203. Another surprising picture from the cell phone camera - perhaps taken unintentionally when the hand finger was close to the lens.
33204. Bucket with rocks in the entrance shaft, at the author's feet
33205. Marjan joined the cave team and so Mare pulled the buckets up on his own.
33207. Northern side of the gazeebo with the new door installed
33209. Ile in the door, view out
33208. Manč brought a battery powered 4-LED light ceiling panel, here admired by Ile and Žan. Winter days are short and darkness comes soon in the afternoon.
33206. Ičo is adding flavour to saveloy slices at the open fire.
Final verdict of the LG K8 G4 phone camera: quite usable in ample to moderate light, less so in poor light. In short - comes in very handy when no proper camera is available. Can be carried in the inner caving suit pocket almost unnoticed. Canon EOS 100 D, one of the smallest and lightest SLR cameras, with 40 mm f 2.8 STM (pancake) lens can also be carried inside the caving suit, in the armpit, but is very much noticed, especially in narrow parts of the cave. 100 D with standard zoom lens is just too bulky and heavy for the caving suit, has to be carried in a separate cave transport bag.
