48367. The cave is located just below the karst edge, it is accessible by a forest track from the parking lot below the Socerb Castle. From the track turn west, descend a few tens of meters through a sparse forest or what is left of it after the last wind throw a few years ago. The descent is complicated by bramble. A a small vertical drop down follows which can easily be climbed. Below the wall there is this path which you follow to the north, ...

48366. ... by a distance of a stone's throw, and you reach the cave entrance.

48354. View out from the entrance, towards the west, to the italian side

48353. The tunnel immediately opens up to quite ample size. In the picture is a view from inside the tunnel to the bend before the entrance - to the right of Claudio.

48356. At the end the ceiling lowers to much smaller height, and the passage is filled to the top with sediments, with interchanging layers of earth and thin calcite. After the independence of Slovenia in the summer of 1992, Stojan and Claudio immediately visited the cave, which had been known for a long time but was inaccessible due to its location in the Yugoslavian border zone. They decided to try their luck by digging at this point.

48357. After a few excursions they gave up and now, after many years, Claudio has decided on a new try. A 25-liter plastic fuel tank without one side serves as a vessel to pull out the excavated material.

48359. There is not much space, only for the vessel and the digger.

48360. A woodlouse, Porcellio scaber, crawled into the cave from the surface.

48361. Among the sediments, the way forward was sometimes obstructed by a larger rock.

48363. View of the end of the dig, about 4 m from the end of the hall. The draft seems to be disappearing into the chimney.

48362. The view from the middle of the passage towards the entrance. Claudio is tired, 42 vessels of excavated material is took its toll.

48358. View from the end of the hall back towards the entrance - to a small barrier in the ceiling. Like the other walls it is very light in color, and the calcite coatings are almost white.

48364. Claudio inspecting a side chimney ...

48365. ... and examining the ceiling of the entrance hall before it descends to the excavation site.

48355. View from the entrance to the west, down a sparse forest

48368. A little higher from the path a wider view opens up, to the eastern part of Trieste with Dolina. On the right is the Finnish machine factory Wärtsilä Italia.

48369. Even better view opens from the forest track, in the middle is Miljski zaliv (Baia di Muggia).
